Samuel Alloway Samuel Alloway is listed in the trade directories for 1811-12 as a "China, glass & Staffordshire warehouse" at 25 King Street. For 1813-15 the name cahnges to "Alloway, Ring & Pole". For 1816-1821 the name is "Samuel Alloway & Co", with the business as before. For 1816 and 1818-21 the address is given as 137 Redcliff Street, and for 1817 as 25 King Street.
The above is a blue transfer printed dish supplied by Alloway to the Clifton Grand hotel. On the back it has "S ALLOWAY BRISTOL". The dish was probably made in Staffordshire. The hotel, otherwise known as The Assembly Rooms, was opened in 1811. In 1882 the building was taken over by the Clifton Club, who are still there. Below is a view of the building in 2009, followed by an early 19th century trade card for the hotel.
