Delftware Apprentices and Employees

Details are from Jackson/Price.  Codes used: A = Start of apprenticeship, F = Date of becoming free (a burgess), No letter = mentioned only.  Until 1752 the new year began on 25th March (lady day).  As far as possible the year is given in the post 1751 form.

Some of these apprentices were stoneware potters, since some of the delftware factories also made stoneware.

Mathew Wilcox

Mathew (or Mathias) Wilxox was a grocer (at that time the word meant merchant) and had property at Redcliff Gate.  The Redcliff Gate property was probably used for glassmaking.  It is possible that these two apprentice potters worked for Edward Crofts in Redcliff Street, if so the Wilcox would have been a partner of Crofts.  W J Pountney associated him with Brislington, probably incorrectly.
