Anthony Amatt's Family History

The following information was kindly provided by Philip Amatt, who can trace his ancestory back to 1625, and is related to George Amatt (a brother of Anthony).

In 1625 Rychard Amot married Susannah Brount in Wirksworth, Derbyshire.  George Amot was born around 1727 in Wirksworth, the son of Anthony Amot and Sarah Dale.  George, a joiner, married Hannah (possibly Anna) Down, of nearby Kirk Ireton, in 1751.  They had several children, of which the year of christening is given:  Thomas (1752), Dorothy (1754), George (1756, who presumably died in infancy), George (1759), Anthony (1761), John (1766) and Hannah (1769).

Owen says Anthony was born in 1759, this was worked from the fact that he was said to be 92 when he died in 1851.  This would appear to ne incorrect and he was only 90 or 91 when he died. There was a little known porcelain factory at Wirksworth between 1770 and 1777, and it is possible that Amatt may have worked there as a boy (Owen may have confused this with the Bristol factory, where he claimed Amatt worked).

The Anthony of 1761 is presumably the person who ended his days in Bristol (it is possible that our Anthony is from a different branch of the family).  The George of 1759 married Francis Mogatrite (probably Murgatroyd) in 1780.  They had 10 children, one of whom was also called George and was christened in 1797.  This is probably the George to whom the Bristol Anthony left part of his estate.  George is mentioned in Pigot's Directory being at 28 Peter Street, Derby.

Amatts's first wife, Peggy, died in 1808 and was buried in Twerton church, Bath (Owen) and be remarried some nine years later (Pountney).

The 1841 census shows him living at 9 Adelaide Place.  He was 80 yeras old and described at a potter.  In the same property was Susannah Tippett, aged 65, described as a servant.  The 1851 censusshows them both residing at 48 Chatterton Square, now aged 90 and 75 respectively.  Anthony is described as a retired potter, whose place of birth was Worksworth, Derbyshire.  Susannah is described as a general servant, whose place of birth was Keynsham, Somerset.
