Jesse William Wyatt This person is listed in Wright's trade directory at 86 Bell Hill Road, St. George, between 1912 and 1919, and is described as a potter. That is all I knew about him until I received an email from Sheila Wyatt, whose husband is the great grandson of Jesse. Sheila lives in Ontario, Canada. The 1901 census describes him as a potter of clay pipes (I assume for tobacco smoking) and bricks. He was 34 and his wife Mary A 35, both were born in Siston Gloucestershire. At that time they lived at 8 Station Road, Warmley, Gloucestershire. They were married in 1885 at Barton Regis. The name Barton Regis disappeared when Bristol expanded in the late 19th century, the area now includes Redfield and Upper Easton, it is to the west of St. George. They had 21 children, although only about 12 survived. Jesse died around the age of 40, of an ulcerated stomach, and was a lay minister of the chapel nearby. The chapel may have been at 82 Bell Hill Road. One of his sons, also called Jesse William, was born in 1888. In 1907 he married Clara Elizabeth Coates. Shortly after they emigrated to Canada, where Jesse junior became superindentant of Medalta Potteries, Alberta. He would later own Alberta Potteries of Red Cliff, Alberta, and work at Smith and Stone Porcelain in Georgetown, where he modeled a set of salt and pepper shakers for RCA, which were a likeness of Nipper in His Masters Voice. Nipper was a dog who appeared listening to gramophone, he was a real dog who originated in Bristol! Sheila's father in law told her that he was the only Wyatt, in six generations, who had not made a living in pottery. Sheila's husband's first job was to cast for his uncle (Jesse senior's grandson). Jesse junior had a brother Thomas J, who was killed in 1917, while serving in France, at the age of 23. His parents are listed at the Bell Hill Road address. |
